Dr Atkins Diet: Side Effects

idiotdietweightlosstapeAs much as the world is fascinated by the amazing Dr Atkins diet, there have been harsh critics and reports of undesirable side effects by people undergoing this diet program. While this may seem a little inconvenient, this should never be a deterrence factor that prevents you for trying out this weight loss program. It is best to read the pros and cons and consider if these sacrifices are worth enduring if you can reach your weight loss goals in the long run.

Let’s look at some of the most common side effects of the Atkins diet.

1: Bad Breath
Bad breath is often an irritating side effect of the Dr Atkins diet program. This is actually caused by the burning down of the fat in the body which is referred to as the ketones. Normally these substances are expelled through the urine, but some of it are also present in the breath and expelled through the mouth. A good way to overcome this is to invest in breath fresheners and chewing gums which can help keep the breath fresh. Drinking plenty of water can help reduce this effect as well.

2: Tiredness
It is common to experience tiredness and a general feeling of sluggishness when you’re on the Atkins diet. General feeling of weakness is quite common, especially during the induction stage of the program where drastic reduction in the intake of carbohydrates is required to induce the body to get into the ketosis stage.

Another common side effect is dizziness. Those who pursue this diet program often complain of mild dizziness as their body burn off more fat in large qualities to produce energy. The rapid acceleration of fat burning can cause the body to react in some ways and dizziness may be one of the symptoms you may experience.

3: Insomnia
Large amounts of fat being burnt can cause you to feel more alert and it is possible to experience insomnia or the inability to sleep. However, this is a temporary symptom that should disappear as you progress further into the program. If the symptoms last longer than a month or so, do consult a doctor to find out the real reasons behind your inability to sleep.

4: Nausea
Nausea is another symptom of the Dr Atkins diet. However, this normally does not end up in more severe symptoms such as actual vomiting. The mild feeling of uneasiness would normally go away as soon as your body adapts to the new style of dietary intake that is required by the Atkins diet.

5: Constipation
This is another common symptom of the Dr Atkins diet program. With low levels of vegetables and fruits and higher protein intake, which means less fiber intake, can lead to constipation problems. You may need to take some additional supplements such as psyllium husk powder or other dietary fiber supplement to augment the digestive system during the weight loss program.
